Remembering Tony Hsieh

The news of Tony’s passing has been devastating to our community as a whole. The outpouring of love and support that we’ve received has been both overwhelming and uplifting. From all of the emails, texts, cards, flowers, and so on; you can truly feel the warmth and connectedness that runs deep within our DTLV community. We’ve loved hearing all of the stories and memories of how Tony has touched our hearts and spirits in many unique ways.

Tony had an obvious impact on, not only DTLV, but the world. Most people knew him as an entrepreneur, a visionary, and an author. Tony was a humanitarian who loved and cared about people; proven in his relentless pursuit of Delivering Happiness to everyone he possibly could.

Others knew Tony as a family member, a mentor, and most importantly, as a friend. The depth of relationships that he had with so many people was remarkable. His commitments often pulled him in many directions, but he always made time for friendships. As a friend he was authentic, loving, kind, and selfless.

While many knew him in various roles, to us he was DTP’s Tony. He was our Tony. He had a vision of building a community centered around collisions and connectedness. He took a chance on a forgotten area that no one else would. He laid the foundation of a neighborhood made up of small businesses and creatives striving to support one another. Tony challenged us to always look at things differently. His DTLV has been a story that continues to unfold. It is fluid and ever changing; providing a sense of discovery at each visit and every turn. That was his vision that we carry forward today.

We also knew him as an avid traveler. He was always on the move and his preferred method of transportation was on his bus. Not widely known as a sports fan, Tony quickly became a Vegas Golden Knights super fan who attended as many games as possible. He was passionate about many, many things…we’ll always remember his love of soups and him as a pickle connoisseur.

In his absence, we are committed to continuing Delivering Happiness; as the story of his legacy has just begun to unfold.

There are countless videos and photographs recognizing how he changed our DTP lives; how he impacted so many. Attached is a video capturing some of these tributes and how we’ve felt his impact. I encourage you to watch the video when you have a private moment; to feel this impact and reflect on it.

Tony Hsieh Community Celebration of Life

On December 11th, community-wide celebrations commenced in spaces and places filled with people and things that our late founder Tony Hsieh loved, all held to commemorate his birthday, deemed ‘Tony Hsieh Day’ by Zappos and DTP. The City of Las Vegas and Zappos kicked the festivities off with an invite-only renaming of the Zappos Council Chambers to “Tony Hsieh Theater”, while DTP Companies held several community events including an Art Car showcase, live music and variety show at Downtown Container Park which included musical artists and DJs throughout the evening. A mural of Tony was debuted on the side of Inspire in the heart of the neighborhood Tony revitalized.
